Are Competitive Foods Losing Their Competitive Edge?

Overconsumption of low nutrient quality food in schools contributes to childhood obesity and weakens the strength of our national security and defense, according a new report.

The report by the organization Mission: Readiness titled "Still Too Fat To Fight" supports updating nutrition standards for competitive foods, or foods sold in a la carte lines, snack bars, vending machines and outside of school meals.

The Academy and its partners in the National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity advocate for science-based nutrition standards as the USDA develops rules regarding competitive foods in schools as part of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act.

Altering foods sold in schools is just one piece of the puzzle. A recent report by Trust for America's Health recommends involving every sector at every level to prevent adult obesity rates from reaching 44 percent or above, as projected to occur in every state by 2030.
