Latino Communities Burdened by Both Hunger and Obesity

Academy member and past president Judith C. Rodriguez, PhD, RD, FADA, LDN, joined other leaders at a National Hispanic Medical Association Congressional briefing to discuss efforts to reduce childhood obesity and end hunger in the Latino community.

Experts examined the current situation for Latino communities as they struggle with the complex burden of high food insecurity and higher rates of obesity and diet-related diseases. Nearly one in three Hispanic children received emergency food assistance in 2009. Initiatives like Feeding America and Fuel Up to Play 60 are increasing access to healthy foods, nutrition education and physical activity for kids.

Get more information on how you can help from the Latinos and Hispanics in Dietetics and Nutrition member interest group.
