Amid Drought, Academy Emphasizes Support for Dairy Farmers

During one of the most severe and widespread droughts to affect the United States in a half-century, the Academy has communicated its support for the agricultural community, including dairy farmers.

In a letter to the chief executive officer of Dairy Management Inc., which represents the dairy industry and includes many Academy members, the Academy expressed its stance that relief for farmers should be included in the Farm Bill now being considered by Congress.

According to the letter: "The Academy is aware of not only the impact of the drought on food security and nutritional intake, but also of the position of many Academy members who themselves are farmers. We believe it is crucial that the Farm Bill includes relief for these farmers. And dairy farmers are being hit especially hard, as many are uninsured—a situation that is addressed in the proposed Farm Bill."

The letter emphasizes that the Academy will continue to push for the passage of the Farm Bill.
