Academy Participates in Visible Leadership Efforts during National Hunger Action Month, Childhood Obesity Month

The Academy is continuing its efforts to increase access to healthy and safe food and promote members' efforts in reducing food insecurity.

  • Mary Pat Raimondi, MS, RD, vice president for strategic policy and partnerships, participated in a White House event September 6 honoring domestic and international food security champions. The White House is featuring food security as part of its Champions of Change program that recognizes everyday heroes. More information on this program.
  • The Academy along with Feeding America participated September 13 in an interactive, grassroots virtual town hall focusing on childhood hunger and obesity. Mary Pat Raimondi was part of a roundtable discussion with policy experts from Feeding America and Voices for America's Children about the challenges and opportunities on the ground and in Congress. Special guest Sam Kass, White House assistant chef and senior policy advisor for healthy food initiatives, answered questions and discussed programs and initiatives aimed at fighting hunger and obesity.
  • The National Hispanic Medical Association will hold a Congressional briefing September 16 on "The Child Obesity Paradox: Overweight and Undernourished" to educate Congressional staff on the importance of nutrition education as the solution. Academy member and past-president Judith C. Rodriguez, PhD, RD, FADA, LDN, will represent the Academy and provide information about the new partnership with the National Dairy Council and Feeding America. In addition, she will share her research in this area that has made an impact on improving lives.
