FDA Fails to Follow Law, Sued by Safety Groups

Action taken by the Center for Food Safety and the Center for Environmental Health has resulted in a lawsuit aimed at the Food and Drug Administration for failing to develop updated food safety standards.

President Obama signed the Food Safety and Modernization Act into law in January 2011. The law stated the FDA was supposed to strengthen the food safety system and guard against outbreaks of food-related illnesses by January of this year. The lawsuit's objective is to require the FDA to implement the new regulations promptly. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every year, one in six Americans (48 million people) get sick from food-borne diseases, 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die. The case is Center for Food Safety v. Hamburg, 12-4529, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California (San Francisco).
