2012 Drought Continues to Cause Havoc on Food System ... Farm Bill Passage Is Needed

Triple-digit temperatures and little rain this summer are responsible for one of the most severe and widespread U.S. droughts in a half-century. As a result, the impact will hit grocery shelves and the global food market. The Academy continues to work with members of the House of Representative to pass a fair and equitable Farm Bill that will offer some longer-term solutions.

The Academy is aware of not only the impact on food security and nutritional intake, but also the position of our many members who are farmers. It is crucial that the Farm Bill includes relief for these farmers. Dairy farmers are affected especially now, as many are uninsured – something that is addressed in the proposed Farm Bill. The Academy will continue to push for the passage of a Farm Bill when Congress returns next week.
