Academy Meets with Congressional Leaders in Chicago

The Academy hosted a luncheon last week at the Headquarters office in Chicago, highlighting the role of nutrition in treating and preventing chronic disease and the need for a diversified workforce. The event, organized by the Academy's Political Action Committee, supported Rep. James Clyburn (S.C.) and included Rep. Danny Davis (Ill.) as a guest. The congressmen met with Academy leaders and voiced support for legislative and regulatory language that includes nutrition counseling and the registered dietitian.

Later that evening, representatives of the Illinois Dietetic Association, Academy Directors Sandra L. Gill, PhD, and Mary K. Russell, MS, RD, LDN, and Academy senior staff members attended "Celebrate Diversity," a dinner hosted by Barnes & Thornburg, LLP. The Academy was acknowledged as a supporting organization for the third consecutive year. U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II (Mo.), chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, was the keynote speaker. Rep. Cleaver has agreed to meet with Academy leaders to discuss diversity strategies for nutrition and dietetics educational programs.
