Celebrating Ten Years of Distance Learning

The Academy's Center for Professional Development held its first teleseminar in September 2002 and is still bringing high-quality continuing education to members wherever they live and work. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of distance learning opportunities for members, ten registrants for the September 12 webinar "Whole Grains - Overcoming Barriers Between Scientific Evidence and Consumer Behavior" will be placed in a drawing to win complimentary registration for a future webinar of their choice.

Upcoming teleseminars include:

  • August 22: "Nutrition-Focused Physical Examination and Laboratory Values." Who better to guide you through a nutrition-focused physical assessment than a registered dietitian who is also a physician? Let Heather Breen, MD, RD, acquaint you with physical examination techniques based on the various systems of the body—oropharynx, dermatological, musculoskeletal and more. She will also discuss relevant laboratory findings you should know.
  • September 12: "Whole Grains: Overcoming Barriers Between Scientific Evidence and Consumer Behavior." Scientific evidence associates whole-grain intake with lower risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and obesity – leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the U.S. – and is the basis for current recommendations. Yet disparity continues between the evidence and consumer intake. This webinar will examine the scientific evidence, highlighting outcomes of recent summits and conferences; look at current whole-grain recommendations, including how whole grains are positioned on ChooseMyPlate.gov and intake levels; discuss barriers to and opportunities for increased intake of whole grains; and suggest practical strategies nutrition professionals can apply in their practice settings to help individuals obtain essential nutrients, different types of fiber and important phytochemicals.

Each webinar will last from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Central Time.
