Congressional Budget Office Releases New Cost on Affordable Care Act

In late June the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the individual mandate within the Affordable Care Act. However, the court also ruled that states cannot be forced by the federal government to take additional funds to expand their Medicaid program(s).

This ruling has caused the Congressional Budget Office to recalibrate their initial budgetary impact of the healthcare law. The new estimates suggest that implementation of the law will save a net $84 billion over 10 years on what our country spends on healthcare. The law would also cost the government $24 billion less than expected over the same time period. The CBO ran a number of scenarios where certain states would reject the additional Medicaid funding and found that on average 3 million fewer people will be insured due to the Supreme Court's ruling. Visit the CBO's website for more information.
