USDA Beats Deadline for First Lady's Healthier School Challenge

As of the last week in July there are 3,717 schools that are certified in the HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC). The challenge, which was incorporated by the First Lady's Lets Move! campaign in 2010, aims to recognize those schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that increase nutrition and physical activity awareness in their school.

In 2010 the First Lady challenged the nation's schools to double the number of HUSSC schools, and then double that number for the next two years. Each school is recognized by its level of excellence with Gold, Silver and Bronze classifications. As the new school meal standards begin to take affect this school year this outcome is a promising step towards improving nutrition in schools across America.
