2012 Farm Bill Update...New Scenario

As previously noted, the Senate has passed its version of the Farm Bill and the House of Representatives has completed work in Committee, but has not brought the bill forward for action. The recent drought that has hit many parts of the country continues to fuel outside pressure to act.

The latest scenario would create a situation where the House would vote this week on a bill that would include livestock, fruit and vegetable disaster aid. Congressman Frank Lucas (Ok.), chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, has said publically that House leadership is "on board for the vote." The bill would then move to a Conference committee along with the Senate-passed bill in September. No word yet as to whether the bill would be a one year extension or a complete reauthorization. The actual deadline for many of the programs within the Farm Bill is September 30, 2012.
