Senator Releases Report on State by State Impact on Sequestration Cuts to Health Programs

Sequestration is a process that was created by Congress under a law passed last summer known as the Budget Control Act. This process will cut $1.2 trillion over 10 years from the federal budget. Senator Tom Harkin (Iowa), chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, has released the first report of its kind to properly identify the impact sequestration will have on various health, education and labor programs.

This report provides national and state-by-state estimates of the number of jobs that could be lost and the number of individuals who would be affected by cuts, many which would directly impact registered dietitians. For example, senior nutrition programs (which are formula-based grants issued to states for congregate and home-delivered meals) would see a total cut of 17 million meals in 2013. The National Institute of Health (the country's preeminent medical research agency) would see 700 fewer research grants awarded in 2013. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases alone would see a $150,000 cut. Download a pdf of the entire report and see how your state would be impacted.
