Judy Caplan in DC

Member Represents Academy Urging Congress to Restore SNAP Funds in Farm Bill

Academy member and national media spokesperson Judy Caplan, MS, RD, was among the speakers at a July 10 rally of members of Congress and nutrition and health organizations, held outside the U.S. Capitol, titled "Real Cuts, Real Consequences: Congressional Champions, National Organizations and Advocates Respond to Farm Bill SNAP Cuts on Capitol Hill."

The event focused on the House Agriculture Committee's proposed cuts of $16 billion over 10 years to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Ms. Caplan represented the Academy and registered dietitians, urging Congress to reconsider the cuts made to SNAP-Ed and the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program. She said:

"It was not enough to just fill recipients' stomachs. We needed to fill their minds as well. SNAP-Ed provides an opportunity to lower health-care costs because it reaches, educates and empowers millions of Americans about healthful eating. The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program is proven to increase children's consumption of produce which also plays a huge role in prevention."

Ms. Caplan manages a private practice and provides consultation on the importance of high-quality nutrition education.

Academy members are urged to continue to educate Congress on the importance of food and nutrition education programs and to provide funding these programs need.
