Agriculture and Food, Nutrition-Focused Physicals, Whole Grains: Upcoming Webinars for Summer CPE

The Center for Professional Development is offering summer webinars for members on a series of timely topics.

Each webinar will last from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Central Time.

July 26: "Agricultural and Food Production Practices: Sorting Out the Science on Nutrition and Food Safety." Three knowledgeable industry experts – a USDA researcher, a university executive and a trade information spokesperson – will sort the wheat from the chaff on nutrition and safety of organic and conventional foods and food production systems. They will discuss the challenges and rewards of various agricultural methods. Learn what is myth and what is science and how to communicate the truth to your clients and consumers.

August 22: "Nutrition-Focused Physical Examination and Laboratory Values." Who better to guide you through a nutrition-focused physical assessment than a registered dietitian who is also a physician? Let Heather Breen, MD, RD, acquaint you with physical examination techniques based on the various systems of the body—oropharynx, dermatological, musculoskeletal and more. She will also discuss relevant laboratory findings you should know.

September 12: "Whole Grains: Overcoming Barriers Between Scientific Evidence and Consumer Behavior." Scientific evidence associates whole-grain intake with lower risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and obesity – leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the U.S. – and is the basis for current recommendations. Yet disparity continues between the evidence and consumer intake. This webinar will examine the scientific evidence, highlighting outcomes of recent summits and conferences; look at current whole-grain recommendations, including how whole grains are positioned on ChooseMyPlate.gov and intake levels; discuss barriers to and opportunities for increased intake of whole grains; and suggest practical strategies nutrition professionals can apply in their practice settings to help individuals obtain essential nutrients, different types of fiber and important phytochemicals.
