Farm Bill Passes in Senate

The 2012 Farm Bill took a step forward last week toward becoming law when it was passed by the Senate with bipartisan support.

The Senate considered more than 70 amendments before taking the final vote, a number of which would have negatively impacted nutrition programs. Academy staff reached out to Congressional staff and urged Academy members to contact their Senators regarding the importance of the food and nutrition sections within the bill. A number of amendments to SNAP that would have severely restricted services were defeated and programs such as SNAP-Ed and the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program were fully funded. Rep. Frank Lucas (Okla.), chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, announced his committee would move back the date for beginning work on the House version of the Farm Bill. The House is expected to begin the process after the July 4 recess.
