Farm Bill Update

A new Congressional Budget Office analysis has been released for the official Senate Farm Bill, also known as the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act (S. 3240). The analysis revealed that 500,000 households would see monthly food benefits reduced by an average of $90 beginning in fiscal year 2014.

The bill includes $4.5 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly referred to as SNAP, over 10 years and would cut overall spending by $23.6 billion.

The Senate, led by Sen. Reid (Nev.) has identified the Farm Bill as the number-two issue on the summer agenda. The House did not list the Farm Bill in its summer agenda that was released last week by Majority Leader Cantor (Va.). Rep. Lucas (Neb.), chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, is still committed to completing a bill on which both chambers can come to agreement by either June or September.
