Academy Again Participates in Olympic Torch Relay

Ethan A. Bergman, PhD, RD, FADA, CD, the Academy's 2012-2013 president, will represent members by participating July 11 in the 2012 Olympic Torch relay in Great Britain, as the torch makes its way to London for the Olympic Games. President Bergman is one of 22 Americans invited to carry the torch by The Coca-Cola Company, through the company's Live Positively program.

President Bergman will carry the torch through Basingstoke, in southwestern England, on Day 54 of the 70-day relay that began May 19.

"It is important to me to support my profession that is on the forefront of helping the public with nutrition and health related issues and concerns," he said. "I have always been a fan of the Olympics. As an aging athlete myself, I admire the motivation and dedication it takes to reach the pinnacle of performance that results in participating in the Olympics. I also admire the ideal of competing for the enjoyment of the training and competition, no matter what the outcome. So carrying the torch will be a chance to share in this enjoyment of competition."

In January 2010, President Jessie M. Pavlinac, MS, RD, CSR, LD, participated in the relay leading up to the Vancouver Olympics.

The torch relay can be viewed online.
