Georgia's Governor Announces Childhood Obesity Initiative

In announcing the SHAPE program, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal addressed efforts to combat childhood obesity through government, philanthropic and academic initiatives. Georgia SHAPE features a website with a fitness directory promoting breastfeeding, exercise and better nutritional options for students.

Child-care programs implementing wellness policies and related training will earn the Governor's award designating them a Georgia SHAPE-compliant facility. Deal said: "This affects all of us. We must work together to improve the health of children in our state. Some suggest that we're raising the first generation of American kids to have shorter life expectancy then their parents because of problems related to obesity. We can and will do better to promote healthy lifestyles."

Deal was joined by Brenda Fitzgerald, MD, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Health, who said: "Georgia SHAPE is more than fitness and exercise; it's about bringing all of Georgia together to reverse the numbers. This really is a call to action by the governor."

Georgia has the country's second-highest obesity rate for children ages 10 to 17; nearly 40 percent of Georgia's children are considered overweight or obese. Additional strategies included in SHAPE are promoting breast feeding and providing better nutritional options for students.
