Prevention Fund Protected in Latest Vote

On May 24, the Senate rejected two specific bills aimed at averting a July 1 doubling of the student loan interest rate. Both a Republican plan and a Democratic plan failed.

The Prevention Fund letter now contains 38 senators' signatures - just two short of a filibuster-proof majority. The letter urges Senate leadership to protect the Fund against being used to pay for other measures. When the Senate votes again on the interest rate bill, the Prevention Fund may be in jeopardy, so it is critical that the letter receive as many signatures as possible.

Senators not yet signed on include Baucus (Mont.), Carper (Del.), Coons (Del.), Kohl (Wis.), Lieberman (Conn.), McCaskill (Mo.), Nelson (Neb.), Warner (Va.) and Webb (Va.). If you live in one of these states and have not urged your Senator to sign on, contact your Public Policy Coordinator to find out how you can help send a message to protect the Fund. Last week, Academy staff met with Sen. Kohl (Wis.) and representatives from the Prevention Fund group to discuss the letter and to ask for the senator's support.
