Two Evidence-Based Nutrition Practice Guidelines Published

The Academy's Research and Strategic Business Development Team is pleased to announce the updated publication of the Critical Illness Nutrition Evidence-Based Nutrition Practice Guideline, which updates the 2006 guideline; and the publication of the Food and Nutrition for Older Adults Promoting Health and Wellness Recommendations. These free resources for all Academy members are available at the Evidence Analysis Library.

The Critical Illness Nutrition Guideline provides evidence-based recommendations for the critically ill adult patient who requires enteral nutrition, with 22 nutrition updated or new recommendations, including:

  • Determining resting metabolic rate
  • Enteral vs. Parenteral nutrition
  • Initiation of enteral nutrition
  • Feeding tube site
  • Enteral nutrition energy delivery
  • Blue dye use
  • Optimizing enteral nutrition delivery
  • Immune-modulating enteral nutrition
  • Enteral nutrition and fiber
  • Supplemental enteral and intravenous glutamine
  • Hypocaloric, high protein feeding regimen
  • Blood glucose control.

The Food and Nutrition for Older Adults Promoting Health and Wellness Recommendations are among the topics included in the Academy's position paper Food and Nutrition for Older Adults Promoting Health and Wellness, which will be released later this year. These systematically developed recommendations, based on scientific evidence, are designed to assist practitioners on the appropriate nutrition care for older adults, addressing these topics:

  • Weight management in the older adult
  • United States Department of Agriculture and Older Americans Act Nutrition Service Program for older adults
  • Antioxidant consumption and age-related macular degeneration and cognitive function in older adults.

The intent of Academy guidelines is to support the integration of evidence-based dietetics practice and improve the quality of care. Seventeen guidelines on the EAL include adult weight management, celiac disease, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, critical illness, diabetes, disorders of lipid metabolism, gestational diabetes mellitus, heart failure, HIV/AIDS, hypertension, oncology, pediatric weight management, spinal cord injury, unintended weight loss for older adults and vegetarian nutrition.
