Using SNAP Benefits at Farmers Markets

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will dedicate $4 million in FY 2012 so states can provide mobile electronic benefit transfer machines at farmers markets, enabling people to use their SNAP benefits at the markets, purchasing healthy and locally grown foods while supporting local economies.

Last year, the Academy and other organizations advocated on behalf of this issue to the Secretary of Agriculture. With these funds, a big step has been taken in ensuring all Americans have access to fresh and nutritious foods. The success of this initiative came from a Healthy Farms, Healthy People Coalition meeting in Washington, D.C. The coalition continues to engage in important food policy work.
