International Economic Trends Affect State Budgets

A new report from the Joint Economic Committee's Republicans suggest states with economic policies "most like Greece" should not expect help from the federal government. The report calls on these states to take independent initiative to make dramatic fiscal changes. How does this news affect registered dietitians?

"States that have followed Europe’s economic policy model of unbridled spending are getting Europe's economic results: low growth and looming fiscal catastrophe," according to a recent article by Rep. Kevin Brady (Texas) and Sen. Jim DeMint (S.C.). The report refers specifically to California, Illinois, Michigan, Utah, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Wisconsin.

Governors and state agency officials will be seeking new solutions to reducing state budget deficits. Some have embraced the myth that all deregulation saves money and may be looking at eliminating licensing/certification boards as a result.

State affiliate leaders need to utilize their Academy Licensure Liaisons to keep them informed on the status of their licensing/certification boards' terms of service and current issues. Efforts to seek ongoing relationships with your governor's office are critical. For more information about the role of Licensure Liaisons, contact Juliana Smith.
