Thank You to Linda Van Horn, Journal Editor-in-Chief

The Academy extends a heartfelt thank you to Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Editor-in-Chief Linda Van Horn, PhD, RD, on her upcoming 10th year of service. In May 2013, Dr. Van Horn will step down, leaving a rich legacy of numerous benchmarks of research publishing success. The Academy has formed a search committee to seek Dr. Van Horn's successor.

The Journal's impact factor increased twofold during Dr. Van Horn's tenure, from 1.631 to 3.244, and the average time from submission to publication has decreased by almost one month. A recent high water mark occurred in late 2011, when the Journal moved to an Articles-in-Press format so practitioners have access to research several months before the information appears in print.

Several new research article categories have been instituted in the Journal by Dr. Van Horn over the past 10 years:

  • Qualitative Research
  • Research and Practice Innovations
  • Practical Clinical Solutions
  • Emerging Science and Translational Applications
  • New Investigator Program Initiative

Dr. Van Horn also spearheaded several theme issues and article series in the Journal relevant to hot topics and emerging areas of the dietetics profession including, an eight-article series on statistics; a 12-article series on nutritional genomics; and theme issues on bariatric surgery, women’s health, cardiovascular health, hunger, childhood overweight/obesity, fruit and vegetable consumption and many more.

Dr. Van Horn has facilitated educational tools and online ancillary material within the Research section, such as free educational slides and online-only content. In fact, the Journal's most popular podcast to date is Dr. Van Horn’s November 2010 discussion of key features and noteworthy findings of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans Advisory Committee, which she chaired.

Dr. Van Horn was also the first to expand the editor-in-chief's office staff to include expert registered dietitians to serve as liaisons with the Board of Editors and as section and oversight editors.

For more information on the position of Journal editor-in-chief, email Jennifer Herendeen.
