House Majority Unveils Budget

The House Budget Committee provided its budget proposal for 2013. This budget, if passed, would have significant changes with health nutrition programs, including:

  • Convert SNAP into a block grant and cut nearly $122.5 billion from spending on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamps over the next 10 years
  • $33 billion in cuts to farm spending
  • Reconsider automatic cuts, to go into effect in January 2013, which could negatively impact WIC
  • Significant reductions in health care funding including research
  • Medicare would no longer make payments to health care providers such as doctors and hospitals; instead vouchers would be provided to beneficiaries to buy coverage from private insurance companies or traditional Medicare.

The full vote of the House is expected later this month.
