Kansas Affiliate Makes Strides in Insurance Exchange

The Kansas Dietetic Association's Public Policy Panel recently met with Robert Moser, MD, secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. KDA provided an overview of the rationale for the inclusion of medical nutrition therapy coverage in the state's health insurance exchange.

Panel members shared testimonials of patients with diabetes who would benefit from MNT services, but may not have insurance coverage to be treated by a registered dietitian. Moser suggested a collaborative approach with physician and mental health provider groups and other local community associations to work toward increasing awareness of RDs' services. Kansas

The following day, Moser was a featured speaker at the Kansas Legislative Day, and presented information on promoting a healthy diet in physician practices and gave an overview of KanCare, the revamped Kansas Medicaid program. "Both of these opportunities gave us great insight on what steps to proceed with next in advocating for RD services within the KanCare plan and to physician offices and other care providers," said Public Policy Coordinator Erin Laurie, MS, RD, LD.
