Intensive Behavioral Counseling Claims Processing

For registered dietitians who plan to partner with primary care providers to deliver new obesity service for Medicare beneficiaries, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has issued claims processing instructions.

The Academy has asked CMS for clarification on the number of units that can be billed per date of service and guidance for potential group visits. Visit the Academy's MNT page for claims processing instructions for the obesity benefit, available under the "Medicare Preventive Services" section (click on "Obesity"). In the near future, the site will feature additional information on "incident to" billing and other resources related to this new preventive services benefit. Future issues of Eat Right Weekly will contain status reports on the Academy's White House petition and the Academy's ongoing conversations with CMS on expanding MNT and the ability of RDs to direct bill for services under Medicare Part B.
