Nation's Governors Address Childhood Hunger

The Education, Early Childhood & Workforce Committee session at the recent National Governors Association Winter Meeting identified childhood hunger as its priority topic. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack shared his perspective on this issue and discussed opportunities for states and the federal government to partner to implement the new child nutrition law.

"Childhood hunger is a priority issue for the nation's governors because it undermines a child's wellness and ability to learn," said Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe, chair of the committee. "Governors are working to solve this problem through the use of innovative policies and tools, including partnership with businesses and nonprofit organizations."

Now that childhood hunger is a priority issue for governors, affiliate leaders can reach out to governor's offices and offer your state dietetic association as a resource on this important issue. Opportunities may also be available with state school nutrition associations to partner on initiatives to address childhood hunger. The Academy will be communicating with the National Governors Association about childhood hunger and will facilitate involvement of affiliates and the Hunger and Environmental Nutrition DPG.
