Prevention and Public Health Fund Cut after Long Battle

After a two-month fight in Congress, the Prevention and Public Health Fund was cut by $5 billion, which will be spread out over the next 10 years. This reduction of funding directly affects community programs that aim to prevent chronic illnesses through nutrition and physical activity.

Unfortunately, the Fund was targeted as a way to help pay for a number of tax extensions that were priorities for Congress. The package, which was not fully funded, included extending unemployment benefits and the payroll tax cut and fully funding physician payments under Medicare through the end of 2012. The Prevention and Public Health Fund is still in operation, and the Academy is part of an effort to raise awareness and protect the Fund. The Academy will continue to work to both restore the cuts and protect current funding.
