Academy Policy Leaders Discuss Hot Topics

Last week's Public Policy Panel forum focused on three issues that could impact coverage for nutrition services throughout the United States: the Essential Health Benefits Package; an update on the Preventing Diabetes in Medicare Act (HR 2741); and the CMS decision on Intensive Behavioral Counseling for Obesity. The Academy recently submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on its proposal for design of the Essential Health Benefits Package.

With 34 states participating in the forum, the dialogue provided an opportunity to hear from the Academy's Pepin Tuma, director of regulatory affairs, and Marsha Schofield, MS, RD, director of nutrition services coverage, and to share ideas among the states.

As specific decisions on the design of the Essential Health Benefits package appear that they will be handed to the states, Reimbursement Representatives and State Regulatory Specialists in each state are taking the lead to ensure affiliates are at the table. To get involved and to learn more on the topics discussed, contact your Reimbursement Representative or State Regulatory Specialist.
