Florida Affiliate Leaders Attend Meeting With HHS Secretary

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and other officials met recently with stakeholders including the Florida Dietetic Association for a roundtable discussion that was part of a series of meetings around the country on topics such as Medicare and related issues.

Florida Dietetic Association public policy panel leaders worked with state legislators and state agency officials to advocate for the inclusion of registered dietitians in state health insurance exchanges and participated in regulatory discussions regarding reimbursement. When HHS announced the roundtable meeting, Florida leadership recognized an opportunity to connect their policy work at the state level with discussions at the federal level.

FDA President Stephanie Norris, MS, RD, LDN, said at the meeting: "Nutrition is fundamental to health and wellness, and an integral part of the treatment of many chronic diseases. Currently, Medicare only reimburses dietitians for diabetes and kidney disease. We are the one profession specifically trained to provide these services and it is time to invite us to the table."

Academy members Kristin Leonberg, RD, LDN; Meghan Van Camp, RD, LDN; and Roniece Weaver, MS, RD, LD, also represented FDA at the meeting.

Photos of the event have been posted to the Academy's member Facebook page.
