Academy Is There as USDA Sets New School Meal Standards

On January 25, First Lady Michelle Obama and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack unveiled new nutrition standards for school meals for the first time in 15 years. Academy President Sylvia A. Escott-Stump attended the event, where it was announced that new standards will now require schools to offer well-rounded meals that include a range of foods over the course of the week.

For example, high school students will now have to be served five cups of fruits and vegetables per week. More whole grains will also be included in the weekly menu, while sodium and trans fats amounts will be decreased. Most of these new regulations will start in the Fall, but some—including sodium reduction—will be phased in over the next several years.
