Cutting Red Tape: How Affordable Care Act Will Save $4.5 Billion

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates doctors, hospitals, state health plans and private health plans will be able to cut $4.5 billion over 10 years from administrative costs.

Due to regulations built into the Affordable Care Act, new standards have been established for how health providers use electronic systems to quickly determine a patient's eligibility for health coverage. According to a study published in Health Affairs, physicians spend roughly 12 percent of every dollar they receive on filling out forms and performing other administrative tasks. For registered dietitians this means more time spent focusing on care and less time spent focusing on paperwork. This regulation went into effect January 1.
