2012 Farm Bill Update

Senator Ron Wyden (OR) drafted a series of proposals aimed at creating more agriculture jobs and improving access of healthier foods. One of the major proposals will ensure that federal spending by the food stamp and school lunch programs promotes healthier eating, increases consumption of domestically produced fruits and vegetables, and helps local small farmers.

Wyden is advocating for a food stamp waiver process that would allow states to encourage improved nutrition and health outcomes. It would also allow schools to spend some USDA funds on locally produced foods rather than federal warehouses and would exempt farmers from paying taxes on income derived from selling to local schools. The legislation has not yet been introduced into the Senate.
