ADA Speaks on Essential Health Benefits Package

To solicit broad public input on the design of the Essential Health Benefits package required by the Affordable Care Act, the Department of Health and Human Services is holding listening sessions across the country. ADA members have attended sessions to provide comments on behalf of ADA, stating the case for including medical nutrition therapy services provided by registered dietitians.

ADA participants included Angelo Capozzoli, RD, CSR, LD; Kudakwashe M. Chimanya, MS, MPH, RD, LD; Roberta Gershner, MS, RD, CDN; Erica Gradwell, MS, RD; Heidi Roberts, RD, CDE, CD; and Susan Yake, RD, CLC, CDE, CD. Senior HHS officials were in attendance to listen to stakeholder feedback.

Benefits included in this package will affect millions of Americans who will access health insurance through the new Affordable Insurance Exchanges. The final listening session is scheduled for November 21; ADA member Lorri Holzberg, MA, RD, CDE, will attend to speak up for nutrition services as an essential benefit.
