School-Age SNAP Participation Rate Increases

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service has released a report that estimates the number of all Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations participants certified for free school meals jumped over the past year.

Nationally, according to the report, the number of school age SNAP participants was 16 percent higher at the start of the 2010-2011 school year than it was at the start of 2009-2010. States and local educational agencies directly certified 1.9 million more students in 2010-2011 than in the previous year.
