President Issues Executive Order to Ease Drug Shortages

President Obama issued an executive order this week directing the Food and Drug Administration "to take action to help further prevent and reduce prescription drug shortages, protect consumers and prevent price gouging." ADA worked with other key stakeholders, including the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, to help resolve this issue that can cause significant health problems with nutritionally compromised patients. The shortages have affected Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) solutions that include minerals, vitamins and electrolytes.

ADA members visited members of Congress during the summer to ask for their support of legislation introduced in both the Senate and House of Representatives. Although this is not a total resolution to the issue, it is a huge leap forward. ADA will continue to work with partners to assure a full solution is found. ADA members should be proud of their efforts and advocacy.
