Journal Launches e-Pubs

Access new research before it goes to press. Beginning later this month, the Journal of the American Dietetic Association will be posting e-Pubs, also known as Articles in Press (AiP), to the Journal's website ahead of the print issue. This means that members have access to research articles as early as eight weeks after they have been accepted. And Journal authors no longer have to wait for the print edition to see their work broadcast to ADA members and others in health care.

To view Articles in Press, log in to www.eatright.org and click on the "Journal/Publications" link in the menu on the left side of the page. Then click the Journal of the American Dietetic Association link to be taken to the Journal's website. Once there, select "Articles in Press" from the "Articles & Issues" menu at the top of the screen. You can also sign up to be alerted when new articles are posted by going clicking "Add Articles in Press Alert" on the Articles in Press page.

One exciting aspect of Articles in Press is that they can be cited as soon as they appear online. Each AiP contains a digital object identifier that is a unique and persistent identification code for digital articles, such as "doi:10.1016/j.jada.2011.08.044". Researchers and students will enjoy this quick and permanent citation ability, an example of which is:

Murphy MM, Barraj LM, Herman D, Bi X, Cheatham R, Randolph RK. Phytonutrient intake by adults in the United States in relations to fruit and vegetable consumption [published online ahead of print October 5, 2011]. J Am Diet Assoc. doi: 10.1016/j.jada.2011.08.044.

Articles that appear as AiPs will be published in a future edition of the print Journal, but will carry their DOI publication place and date.

More and more science and scholarly journals are opting for AiPs as a method to "get the information out there quickly and accurately." Other journals that have launched AiPs include Lancet, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the American Journal of Medicine, the American Journal of Preventive Medicine and many others. All of the Journal's AiPs include final author and editor corrections, and are considered the "version of record."
