Ohio's Student Policy Day Inspires Public Policy Engagement

More than 100 dietetic interns and students in Ohio heard from state legislators about the importance of getting involved in the policy arena.

Attendees at the third annual Student Policy Day learned about the legislative process, current bills affecting the profession and important opportunities for requesting inclusion of dietetic services.

The Ohio Dietetic Association sponsors a Legislative Day, which includes both active members and students who have an opportunity to join an experienced member in visiting a state legislator. Under the leadership of ODA President Cyndee Stegeman, EdD, RD, RDH, LD, CDE, the program included valuable information from Pat McKnight, MS, RD, LD, FADA, and Natalie Stephens, RD, LD, the state policy representatives for Ohio. State Regulatory Specialist Kay Mavko, MS, RD, LD, presented information on health care reform. Public Policy Coordinator Suzanne Cryst, RD, LD, CSG, presented on the developing federal issues that affect dietetics and the importance of both ADA membership and ADAPAC.

One student noted: "I didn’t realize how important being an advocate was until now."
