Thanks to ADA Members, Alaska Moves

ADA's involvement in First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign was highlighted in the Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo session "Let’s Move RDs into Action." From Nome to Anchorage, ADA's Let's Move! efforts are making a difference in Alaska.

The Alaska Dietetic Association's public policy team began its efforts in Nome. Kelly Keyes, RD, CDE, LD, led a meeting with the mayor, then made a presentation to the Nome school board. With the support of the school board, Alaska Dietetic Association members held a kick- off event connecting local youth and exercise and dance events. Nome community leaders continue to work together to provide opportunities for physical activity, healthy nutrition in schools, tools for parents and caregivers and making healthy food accessible.

In Fairbanks, Jane LeBlond, RD, CNSC, LD, and Tiffany Ricci, RD, LD, convinced local community supporters and the Bassett Army Hospital to join together for the campaign. This collaboration led to a meeting with Mayor Luke Hopkins.

Julianne Minarik, RD, CSP, has set her goal for a meeting with the Anchorage mayor's office. Ms. Minarik has reached out to local nurse practitioners as she works to gain support in securing a meeting with the mayor.

If Alaska can do it, so can the policy team in your state. For more information on Let's Move! initiatives, contact Juliana Smith.
