CEO Reaches Out to Congressional Super Committee

ADA's Chief Executive Office Patricia Babjak joined leaders of national organizations in a letter urging the Super Committee of Congress to continue to fund programs that provide return on investment while improving the health of Americans. ADA supports that budget reductions are necessary for a healthy economy and asks that the Super Committee looks at the evidence.

Cited in the letter is the evidence that an investment of $10 per person per year in proven community-based programs to increase physical activity, improve nutrition and prevent smoking and other tobacco use could save the country more than $15.6 billion annually within five years: a return of $5.60 for every $1 invested. The Super Committee is made up of 12 members of Congress, six Democrats and six Republicans, created by the Budget Control Act of 2011 to craft a deficit reduction bill. This group will look for at least $1.5 trillion in deficit-reduction measures over 10 years; the committee has until November 23 to draft a proposal for Congress.
