Super Committee Could Affect Nutrition Programs

The twelve-member Congressional Super Committee will begin next week to cut $1.5 trillion in spending mandated by the debt ceiling bill agreement. If Congress fails to act by the November 23 deadline, automatic across-the-board cuts will take place including to the defense budget.

ADA's advocacy strategy includes both congressional visits and grassroots engagement. The committee includes six Democrats and six Republicans, split evenly between both the House and the Senate. ADA plans to engage with Democrats Chris Van Hollen (Md.), Xavier Becerra (Calif.), James Clyburn (S.C.), John Kerry (Mass.), Patty Murray (Wash.) and Max Baucus (Mont.); and Republicans Jeb Hensarling (Texas), David Camp (Mich.), Fred Upton (Mich.), John Kyl (Ariz.), Pat Toomey (Pa.) and Rob Portman (Ohio).

Issues of concern include, but are not limited to, funding for WIC, SNAP, SNAP education, Farm to School, the Administration on Aging, CDC funding, congregate- and home-delivered meals and food safety inspection.
