RD Coaches in Energy Balance 4 Kids Program Lead Schools to National Recognition

With the assistance of the RD Nutrition Coaches in the Energy Balance For Kids (EB4K) program, two schools in Kansas City have achieved national recognition and monetary awards through USDA's Healthy US School Challenge.

During the 2010-2011 school year, the EB4K program enhanced its innovative RD Coach intervention to include formation of school Energy Balance (EB) teams of school stakeholders. The EB teams, a type of school health council, created action plans that would improve the school wellness environment by addressing policies regarding school fundraisers, rewards and incentives, physical activity and nutrition education as well as suggesting changes to the school lunch menu.

The work of the EB teams led by the RD Nutrition Coach at each school was instrumental in facilitating needed improvements to the school wellness environment and resulted in implementation of a comprehensive wellness policy. Two schools—Gladstone and John T. Hartman—applied for and received a HUSSC bronze-level award and $500 for the schools' foodservice departments.
