USDA Grants to Reduce Hunger, Improve Nutrition of School-Aged Kids

New Hampshire and Idaho have been awarded grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help eliminate childhood hunger and improve nutrition and health for school-aged kids.

The grants aim to reduce paperwork and expedite certification of students for free meals in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs through a process called direct certification.

With direct certification, states and local educational agencies can automatically enroll students from households already participating in federally funded programs that have verified eligibility. These include the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations.
