Email Scam Targets 'Find a Registered Dietitian' Participants

Recently, ADA has been contacted by members who have received an email from an individual living out of the country wanting to set up an appointment while in town, and asked if it is possible to pre-pay sessions.

An international cashier's check in an amount well over the initial session price is then forwarded. The individual requesting the session then makes contact advising they made a mistake and requests reimburse for the difference between the sessions and the amount paid. The email advises that the contact information for you was found at www.eatright.org. In all likelihood, the message is SPAM and the sender hopes to lure you in to providing some personal information or forwarding money to them. We encourage you to delete this email or any other email you receive that seems odd.

Unfortunately, the Web is open to anyone and that means that anyone can find a directory listing and figure out a way to contact the individuals listed. We should always be vigilant in deleting items from our email boxes that sound suspicious, regardless of what organization or person they reference.
