ADA Comments on Proposed Nutrition Guidelines for Industries Marketing Food to Children

ADA submitted comments last week to the Interagency Working Group (IWG) on Food Marketed to Children’s "Preliminary Proposed Nutrition Principles to Guide Industry Self-Regulatory Efforts" (the Principles).

The IWG, comprised of experts from the FTC, USDA, HHS and the CDC, was tasked by Congress with "develop[ing] recommendations for standards for the marketing of food when such marketing targets children who are 17 years old or younger or when such food represents a significant component of the diets of children." In short, the Principles seek to simultaneously encourage greater consumption of healthful food groups and discourage undesirable nutrients.

ADA staff worked with leaders of the Pediatric Nutrition dietetic practice group and with other members to provide general comments and answers to specific nutrition-related questions posed by the IWG. ADA's comments to the IWG are available in the Regulatory Comments section and the Principles are available on the FTC's website.

ADA also signed-on in general agreement with comments on the Principles submitted by the Food Marketing Workgroup, comprised of more than 95 organizations and experts from diverse fields, including child health and development, nutrition, medicine, public policy, media and marketing.
