Farm Bill Updates

The Senate Agriculture Committee held its second hearing on "Farm Bill Accountability: The Importance of Measuring Performance, While Eliminating Duplication and Waste" to evaluate the use of taxpayer dollars in USDA programs and to ensure that they are cost-effective and achieving the desired results.

Kevin Concannon, USDA undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer services, talked extensively about the SNAP program, stating it is important to maintain public confidence in the SNAP program to serve those in need. The SNAP error rate was 3.1 percent in Fiscal Year 2010, with a record low number of improper payments. This is the fourth consecutive year that the program has achieved record high accuracy rates.
