ADA Meets with CMS on MDS 3.0

ADA staff and members Kathleen Niedert, PhD, MBA, RD, and Brenda Richardson, MA, RD, LD, CD, had a productive meeting June 21 with representatives of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to discuss recommendations for improving the new MDS 3.0 Resident Assessment Instrument Manual.

ADA expressed appreciation to CMS for moving forward on a revised definition and interpretation of therapeutic diets, and offered suggestions for improvement on issues of height measurement, BMI, physician-directed weight loss and the diagnoses of malnutrition and dehydration. The next step will be drafting formal comments to CMS with specific, evidence-based recommendations for revisions to the manual. ADA will continue to work directly with CMS and with strategic partners for improvements related to MDS 3.0 and other nutrition initiatives.
