Member Helps Pick Healthy Choices at Taste of Chicago

An ADA member served on a panel of Chicago-area nutrition and health experts that established nutrition standards for healthy food items at this year's Taste of Chicago festival.

Amy Hess-Fischl, MS, RD, dietitian/diabetes educator at the University of Chicago's Kovler Diabetes Center and chair of ADA's Diabetes Care and Education DPG, served with three physicians on the panel that established nutrition standards for inclusion in the Humana Healthier Choices food guide.

The guide showcases low-calorie, healthy appetizers, entrees and desserts available at Taste of Chicago and directs fest-goers to 17 vendors that will serve foods that meet the standards. Participating restaurants voluntarily submitted nutritional information for their healthier menu items, including calories, sodium content, saturated fat and ingredients.
