Senator Kirk

Illinois Members Meet With Sen. Kirk at ADAPAC-sponsored Event

Members of the Illinois Dietetic Association's public policy panel and ADA's Chief Executive Officer Patricia Babjak brought ADA's issues to the forefront during a meeting in Chicago on June 13 with U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk (R.-Ill.).

In addition to Ms. Babjak, ADA members who attended the event and met with Sen. Kirk were Rachel A. Roggi, RD, LDN; Anna M. Shlachter, MS, RD, LDN; Roberta A. Cooper-Meyer, RD, LDN; and Lisa Eaton-Wright, MS, RD, LDN.

IDA was able to follow up with the Senator regarding diabetes self management training, as well as Senate legislation (SB 296) that helps ensure key ingredients needed for nutrition support including vitamins and minerals are available. Sen. Kirk agreed to meet with ADA and will consider co-sponsoring the legislation.

ADA has been working with Sen. Kirk, who agreed to draft a letter to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to request a change to a 2002 regulation that restricts offering DSMT and medical nutrition therapy on the same date of service.

SB 296, the Preserving Access to Life-Saving Medications Act, would amend the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act to provide the Food and Drug Administration with improved capacity to prevent drug shortages. The bill addresses the shortage of key ingredients for medications and nutrition support that may lead to life-threatening situations for some at-risk patients including neonates, infants and others. Ingredients that have been unavailable include vitamins and minerals needed for parenteral nutrition.

Sen. Kirk was a keynote speaker at ADA's 2011 Public Policy Workshop and has offered his support for ADA initiatives. ADA's Political Action Committee, ADAPAC, supported Sen. Kirk at PPW and this event.
