ADA Requesting Expansion of RD-Provided Services

ADA is drafting a National Coverage Determination, or NCD, to request expansion of RD-provided medical nutrition therapy services under Medicare Part B.

Members of ADA's Nutrition Services Coverage and Policy, Initiatives and Advocacy teams have been working with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to discuss ADA's NCD submission. The NCD process is a statutory mechanism designed to expand services for additional preventive services. The request will initiate the NCD process through the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) and affect the Medicare beneficiary pool – those age 65 and older.

ADA anticipates the request, based on available research, will be submitted at the end of July. ADA is working with other professional associations and groups to garner support for expansion of Medicare MNT services through the NCD. CMS' review of NCDs typically takes nine months and includes a public comment period. ADA is also engaging in different initiatives to increase coverage for other groups outside the Medicare population. Future editions of Eat Right Weekly, along with information on ADA's website will contain updates on what members can do to support the MNT NCD.
